The Terrazo Craze

What Is Terrazzo?
The word "terrazzo" comes from the Italian word “terrazzo” that is translated to mean “polished stone.” These polished stones are actually marble chips, quartz chips, granite chips, glass chips or a combination of these chips that are poured out with a cementitious binder (to help hold everything together), polymeric (for physical binding) or a combination of both. Metal strips divide sections, or sections that change in color or material—these metallic strips add an elegant touch to a grand affair. Kitchens and bathrooms typically feature this type of flooring.
The popularity of terrazzo peaked in the mid-century modern architectural style, which lasted from the 1950s through the early 1970s. Architects favored this luxurious stone for its monolithic and minimalist appeal. By the 1960s and early 70s, most new homes in the Southeast and Southwest were constructed with this beautiful stone flooring.
Apart from its design flexibility, one of the big attractions of Terrazzo is its array of color options. It is also known for its superior sustainability and non-porous nature. After having laid the groundwork in Italy during the 14th century, today this composite and versatile material is making a comeback, not just as a flooring material, but as an element in your home or office design.
